Researchers, cybersecurity organizations, and OpenAI collaborated as part of the "Patch the Planet" initiative to identify two previously undiscovered memory-safety vulnerabilities in PHP, a language that supports about 70% of websites. These vulnerabilities, present for over a decade, allowed the possibility of remote code execution and posed significant security risks, such as unauthorized server control and data theft. Patches to address the flaws were released on October 21, 2026, prompting rapid responses from security agencies and widespread website updates. The discovery illustrates the role that AI can play in proactively detecting critical software issues before they are exploited.
