908 Devices delivers full response analysis with VipIR after magnesium fire at chemical plant — 908 Devices aids IL plant response

An explosion at an Illinois chemical plant in April triggered a magnesium fire, with preliminary investigations pointing to an oxygen sensor failure and several unknown factors under a compressed response window.

In response, 908 Devices introduced its VipIR system to the scene, combining Raman and FTIR technologies with SSP to provide comprehensive chemical analysis. The company emphasizes that with one device integrating both technologies, emergency responders can access confident and rapid answers even when incident chemistry is unclear.

908 Devices has previously supported emergency response efforts with its technology. In 2023, Chilean authorities used the company’s MX908 detection device during the country’s largest drug seizure. Earlier that year, 908 Devices launched the XplorIR handheld FTIR device to help emergency crews quickly identify hazardous gases on scene.
