Barcelona Supercomputing Center expands AI factory support for Spanish startups
AI boost for Spanish startups

Spain's push to build domestic AI capacity is widening through the Barcelona Supercomputing Center's accelerator for startups developing tools for healthcare, utilities and other sectors. New access through the NVIDIA Inception portal broadens the programme's reach as BSC prepares a MareNostrum 5 extension to add more supercomputing capacity across Europe.

Highlights

  • Barcelona Supercomputing Center's AI Factory Accelerator Programme is now fully operational, offering Spanish startups access to sovereign computing, technical support, and NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute courses.
  • The upcoming extension of MareNostrum 5, powered by NVIDIA accelerated computing, will expand supercomputing access for startups through BSC AI Factory and other European AI Factories.
  • Since April 2025, BSC AI Factory has delivered over 800 services, supporting applications such as Qatium's Neural Water Intelligence for 250 utilities and development of AI-driven medical technologies.

Accelerator access expands through NVIDIA network

As reported by NVIDIA Newsroom, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center's AI Factory Accelerator Programme is now fully operational after a pilot phase, giving startups access to sovereign computing capacity, technical support and training. Some BSC AI Factory services are also becoming available through the NVIDIA Inception portal, adding NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute courses, business mentoring and venture capital connections to the support available for participating companies.

BSC says an upcoming extension of MareNostrum 5, its public infrastructure for scientific and technological innovation powered by NVIDIA accelerated computing, will widen supercomputing access through the BSC AI Factory and other AI Factories across Europe. The center describes BSC AI Factory as one of Europe's first such facilities and the first in Spain, adding that it has delivered more than 800 services to private and public sector clients since launching in April 2025.

Healthcare and utility applications lead cohort impact

Among the startups highlighted by the programme, Qatium is moving its Neural Water Intelligence technology into early production. The company, whose platform is already used by more than 250 utilities in 16 countries, trains proprietary AI models on MareNostrum 5 to help water operators improve day-to-day decisions.

OneCareAI, a BSC research spin-off, is developing technology to detect signs of hidden atrial fibrillation in apparently normal ECGs, aiming to help clinicians identify patients at risk of stroke earlier. Avatia has built a voice-first, multi-agent system for pharmaceutical companies that supports sales representatives and provides doctors with curated information on medicines.

The broader cohort includes Agrikola AI, Elna Health, Lokutor, Montevive AI, Oppy, Pack2Earth and Up2Smart, spanning precision agriculture, medical imaging, speech services, enterprise security, sales intelligence and sustainable packaging. The mix of companies underlines how Spain's regional AI infrastructure is being applied to areas ranging from crop protection and breast cancer detection to alternatives to petroleum-based plastics.

Our earlier report on the late-cycle surge in Republican election advertising detailed how tightening polls and voter anxiety over high fuel costs and broader affordability pressures were reshaping campaign strategy across Senate and House races. It also noted that elevated petrol and diesel prices were becoming a central political issue, prompting parties to reallocate resources toward newly competitive contests and away from weaker positions.
