DTCC launches tokenization service with JPMorgan and Citi

A subsidiary of Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has launched a securities tokenization service that allows traditional assets to be transferred onto blockchain networks. Twenty financial companies, including JPMorgan, Citi and Fidelity Investments, have already secured access to the platform.

On October 28, 2026, Depository Trust Company (DTC) announced the launch of DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS) in a press release. The service enables market participants to create digital representations of securities held in custody at the depository.

Tokenized assets can be transferred to digital wallets and converted back into their traditional form. Holders retain the same ownership rights and investor protections as those associated with conventional securities ownership.

Twenty financial companies join DTCC service

Alpaca, Citadel Securities, Citi, Clear Street, DriveWealth, Fidelity Investments, Interchange Clearing and JPMorgan are among the financial institutions that have signed agreements to access DTS.

DTC is one of the largest securities depositories in the United States. The organization holds more than $114 trillion in assets under custody, including stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

The company believes the new service will provide a practical foundation for integrating tokenized securities into existing financial infrastructure.

The launch followed a decision by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In December 2025, the regulator issued a no-action letter regarding the proposed tokenization program, indicating that it would not recommend enforcement action.

In July 2026, DTCC conducted a pilot test of the platform before proceeding with its commercial launch.

Initially, DTS is integrated with Canton Network and DTCC's private network built on Besu. Additional blockchain integrations are planned for 2027.

Market participants highlight liquidity challenges for tokenized assets

Despite infrastructure development, the adoption of tokenized securities continues to face several obstacles. One of the main challenges remains liquidity fragmentation across different platforms and blockchains.

In October 2026, participants at the Cointelegraph CONNECT industry conference in Singapore highlighted uneven growth across the digital asset market. According to their assessments, tokenization infrastructure, stablecoin adoption and user activity are expanding at different rates.

Industry representatives also identified challenges related to managing trading risks and enabling investors to exit positions. These factors could limit the practical use of tokenized instruments even when the technical infrastructure for their issuance is available.

Earlier, we reported that asset manager Federated Hermes plans to issue tokenized investment fund shares. The initiative involves using blockchain technology to expand distribution channels for financial products.
