CME Group soybean futures set open interest record in September
Soybean futures hit record

Rising hedging demand around harvest delays and global crop uncertainty is lifting activity in agricultural derivatives markets. CME Group says its soybean futures reached a new monthly open interest record of 1,118,872 contracts in September, topping the previous high of 1,063,108 set in April 2026.

Highlights

  • CME Group soybean futures open interest set a record in September, reflecting stronger participation amid volatile U.S. harvest delays and Brazilian planting risks.
  • Traders increased activity as rain postponed U.S. harvests, trade talks supported soybean demand, and Super El Niño threatened Brazilian crop yields.
  • CME Group's agriculture segment reached record average daily volume of 2 million contracts and open interest of 10.7 million contracts in the first half of 2026.

Record soybean positioning builds in volatile market

CME Group said the new peak reflects stronger participation as traders respond to several market pressures at the same time. The exchange said trade talks are supporting demand, buyers are hedging the incoming U.S. harvest amid rain delays, and Brazil's planting season is beginning as Super El Niño threatens yields.

John Ricci, Global Head of Agricultural Products at CME Group, said those factors are drawing more participants into the market and pushing trading activity to fresh highs. He added that the company remains focused on providing risk management tools for clients dealing with ongoing volatility.

Agriculture business extends broader 2026 growth

The soybean futures milestone adds to broader momentum in CME Group's agricultural business this year. The company said its agriculture segment posts a record first half in 2026, with average daily volume reaching 2 million contracts and open interest rising to 10.7 million contracts.

The latest record suggests agricultural market users continue to increase hedging and trading activity as weather risks, planting conditions and international trade developments shape price expectations across crop markets.

Bridgewater’s Pure Alpha macro fund posted strong double-digit gains this year, outperforming major U.S. equity indexes despite a volatile backdrop that included a sharp July selloff in AI-related stocks. Our earlier coverage noted that the firm’s AI-focused AIA Macro fund also delivered solid returns, highlighting how active macro and thematic strategies have benefited as traders recalibrated positions after the mid-year dislocation.
