AeroVironment to advance Mars exploration with Skyfall on Space Reactor 1 Freedom launch
AeroVironment is preparing for a new phase in Mars exploration, following its work on the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter program.
The company announced its intent to further collaborate with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the 2028 Space Reactor 1 Freedom mission. This mission will deploy the Skyfall aerial system, continuing AeroVironment's contribution to space innovation and uncrewed planetary flight technology. Details about the features and objectives of Skyfall have not yet been disclosed, but the initiative signals ongoing progress in off-world robotics and aerospace engineering.
AeroVironment has recently highlighted its LOCUST Laser Weapon System for national media at its Albuquerque site, demonstrating counter-drone defense capabilities during a 60 Minutes feature. The company previously introduced LOCUST as an autonomous solution to detect, track, and defeat low-cost drone threats with emphasis on affordability in earlier deployments. These projects underscore AeroVironment's ongoing development of robotic and autonomous aerospace systems.
