Helicopter support accelerates Hawaiian Electric pole upgrades while minimizing impact
Hawaiian Electric uses helicopters for upgrades

Hawaiian Electric has begun upgrading utility poles along the Waialae Nui Ridgeline, deploying helicopter support to transport materials.

The work, which will occur from today until May 15 (excluding weekends and holidays), aims to enhance infrastructure reliability in East Oahu while avoiding flights over populated areas. Hawaiian Electric has advised residents of the increased helicopter activity and thanked the community for its patience and understanding.

The company previously cautioned that severe weather could delay Oahu outage repairs, with some infrastructure potentially needing rebuilding, according to a recent warning. Hawaiian Electric has also reported reaching 37 percent renewable energy use in 2025 as part of its progress toward a 40 percent target for 2030, as outlined in an earlier update. The current pole upgrades follow these ongoing efforts to reinforce the grid and meet long-term goals.
