Anthropic expands AI infrastructure with $35 billion Lambda deal
Anthropic has agreed to a $35 billion cloud-computing deal with Nvidia-backed Lambda, extending its rapid buildout of the infrastructure needed to run increasingly demanding artificial intelligence systems. The agreement centers on a large Texas data center and comes as the AI developer commits tens of billions of dollars to securing additional computing capacity.
Highlights
- Anthropic agreed to a $35 billion cloud deal.
- The Texas project will provide about 350 MW.
- Lambda will supply Nvidia computing capacity.
- Anthropic also committed $45 billion to Nscale.
The project in Nueces County is expected to provide about 350 megawatts of capacity, with former cryptocurrency miner Hut 8 developing the facility, Reuters reported. The arrangement is designed to bring additional Nvidia computing infrastructure online for Anthropic as demand for its Claude AI products expands.
Anthropic accelerates infrastructure spending
The Lambda agreement follows another major commitment from Anthropic. Last week, the company said it would spend $45 billion to rent AI cloud capacity from Nscale at a data center campus in West Virginia.
Together, the projects illustrate the scale of infrastructure Anthropic is assembling as it prepares for further growth. The company, which is moving toward a potential initial public offering, needs substantially more computing power to train AI models and handle rising usage of services including its Claude Code programming tool.
Lambda occupies a central position in the latest expansion because its cloud business provides access to Nvidia hardware without requiring Anthropic to construct and operate all of the underlying infrastructure itself.
AI demand reshapes data center investment
Anthropic’s expansion is part of a broader infrastructure race among AI companies. Generative AI requires large clusters of advanced processors, extensive power supplies, and specialized cooling systems, pushing technology companies and cloud providers toward increasingly large data center projects.
Hut 8’s involvement also shows how the infrastructure landscape is changing. The company has expanded from cryptocurrency mining into AI data centers, where access to electricity and large-scale computing sites has become increasingly valuable.
In July, Hut 8 disclosed a 15-year lease with an investment-grade customer carrying a base contract value of $19.6 billion for its Beacon Point campus. The broader site is designed for as much as one gigawatt of capacity.
Computing capacity becomes a strategic asset
The $35 billion Lambda agreement and Anthropic’s separate $45 billion Nscale commitment show how access to computing infrastructure is becoming a defining cost of competing in advanced AI.
For Anthropic, securing hundreds of megawatts of additional capacity could support both model development and greater commercial use of Claude. For Nvidia, Lambda, and data center operators such as Hut 8, the expansion creates long-term demand for chips, power, and specialized facilities.
The size of these commitments also raises the financial stakes. As AI companies pursue larger computing footprints, their ability to convert infrastructure spending into sustained revenue growth will become an increasingly important test for investors.
