BlackRock joins Jio IPO rush as institutional bids top $26 billion
BlackRock joins $26 billion bidding rush for Jio IPO

BlackRock, GIC, and other major institutional investors have shown strong interest in the initial public offering of India's Jio Platforms, with anchor bids exceeding $26 billion. The demand comes as the Reliance Industries subsidiary prepares for what could become the largest IPO in Indian stock market history by the amount raised in rupees.

Highlights

  • Jio anchor bids exceed $26 billion.
  • BlackRock and GIC join major institutional bidders.
  • Jio targets a record 302 billion rupee IPO.

The offering's institutional anchor portion attracted bids worth approximately 2.5 trillion rupees ($26.3 billion), more than 30 times the 81.1 billion rupees available. BlackRock, Capital Group, and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC were among the interested investors, CNBC reports.

BlackRock and global funds compete for Jio shares

Jio Platforms finalized the allocation of 72.47 million shares to anchor investors at 1,119 rupees each, the top of its indicated price range. The company disclosed the allocation on Monday, ahead of the public subscription period scheduled to run from Wednesday through Friday.

The anchor book allows selected institutional investors to purchase shares before retail investors and other market participants can submit applications. Although demand substantially exceeded the available allocation, the total value of bids does not represent capital raised by Jio.

Other institutions receiving allocations included Life Insurance Corporation of India, Fidelity Investments, JPMorgan Asset Management, and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. Their participation places several major international asset managers alongside domestic financial institutions in the offering.

Reliance targets record Indian IPO

Jio Platforms plans to raise as much as 302 billion rupees, equivalent to roughly $3.2 billion. At the proposed offer price, the company would be valued at approximately $108 billion, below estimates exceeding $130 billion that circulated a year earlier.

The company operates India's largest telecommunications and digital services business and counts Meta and Google among its existing investors. Its parent, Reliance Industries, has sought to position Jio as a broader technology platform rather than solely a mobile network operator.

That distinction matters for investors assessing its valuation. Telecommunications companies typically face substantial infrastructure spending, while digital platforms may offer opportunities to expand services beyond connectivity. The IPO will test how much investors are prepared to pay for Jio's combined business model.

Institutional demand sets the stage for public offering

The scale of anchor bidding provides an early indication of institutional interest, particularly from international funds seeking exposure to India's digital economy. However, oversubscription does not guarantee that the shares will rise after listing or that public investors will show comparable demand.

The difference between the proposed $108 billion valuation and earlier estimates above $130 billion also puts pricing under scrutiny. A lower valuation could make the offering more accessible to investors while leaving Reliance with a smaller proceeds target than a higher-priced sale might have supported.

For BlackRock and other global institutions, the transaction offers access to a large Indian telecommunications and digital services company. The next test comes when public bidding opens Wednesday, determining whether demand extends beyond the institutions that participated in the anchor allocation.
