Best Buy launches gaming beta with IGN as retailer targets category growth
Best Buy unveils gaming beta

Best Buy is expanding its push into gaming with a new beta experience designed to deepen engagement with one of its strongest customer segments. The launch arrives ahead of major video game releases in the coming weeks and adds an online community element to the retailer's broader growth strategy.

Highlights

  • Best Buy launched the beta Best Buy Gamers platform with IGN on Tuesday, offering gaming content, product offers, and updates ahead of major November game releases.
  • Best Buy is targeting growth in gaming during weaker overall sales, leveraging upcoming launches like 'Grand Theft Auto VI' and new community engagement strategies to boost the category.
  • The retailer will introduce in-store gaming experiences in Torrance, California next month in partnership with Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, blending physical and digital touchpoints.

Beta platform rolls out before major game launches

As first reported by CNBC, Best Buy is launching Best Buy Gamers in beta on Tuesday in partnership with video game website IGN, adding gaming content, product offers and launch-related updates to a new online destination for customers.

The retailer says tens of millions of gamers shop with the company each year, whether by testing games in stores or seeking advice from store staff. Chief Revenue Officer Patrick McGinnis says the platform has been in development for more than a year and is timed to coincide with a heavy release calendar, including Nintendo's Nov. 5 release of "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" remake and Take-Two Interactive's Nov. 19 launch of "Grand Theft Auto VI."

McGinnis says the company wants to stay relevant to gamers not only through products and hardware, but also through community-focused engagement. The beta includes articles and reviews, live updates tied to launches and promotions on new technology, while Best Buy plans to refine the experience based on customer feedback.

Gaming strategy supports wider retail turnaround

Best Buy is leaning further into gaming as it looks for growth drivers during a period of weaker sales, tariff pressure and softer consumer confidence. The company previously says gaming and computing help drive first-quarter growth, and incoming CEO Jason Bonfig says demand for "Grand Theft Auto VI" is expected to support the gaming category.

The gaming initiative also extends beyond e-commerce. Best Buy says it is starting in-store gaming experiences next month at a location in Torrance, California, where Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are set to offer activations for customers.

By combining physical retail with its new online platform, Best Buy is seeking a larger role at the intersection of technology, entertainment and culture for gamers. The company sees the segment as one of its strongest performers and views the beta community as part of a broader effort to expand reach and improve the customer experience.
