BBC to close BBC Three, BBC Scotland linear channels in 2027 cost-cutting push
BBC axes TV channels

Facing pressure to deliver £500 million in savings by 2028, the BBC is shutting several linear broadcast services in spring 2027 and reducing jobs across parts of the organisation. The changes include the end of BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra as broadcast outlets, while their programming remains available on digital platforms including iPlayer and Sounds.

Highlights

  • BBC will close BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and BBC Radio 4 Extra as linear channels in spring 2027, shifting content to digital platforms for cost savings.
  • About 100 jobs at BBC News and additional roles, including 10 in Scotland, are being cut as part of the broadcaster's restructuring.
  • Further savings plans across BBC divisions are pending, with more details from BBC News and other units expected early next year.

Closures and savings plan for 2027

As reported by The Guardian, the BBC says BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra will close as linear broadcast services in spring 2027 as part of a broader cost-cutting programme. The broadcaster is also cutting about 100 jobs at BBC News, while additional roles are being lost because of the channel closures, including 10 in Scotland.

BBC Scotland will continue on iPlayer but will no longer operate as a television broadcast channel, with content also available on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland. BBC Three programming will remain on BBC iPlayer and other platforms, including YouTube, while Radio 4 Extra programmes will still be available on BBC Sounds; The Daily Service will move to BBC Sounds and local radio.

In a note to staff, director-general Matt Brittin says the BBC needs to make every pound work harder as it responds to immediate cost pressures and reshapes the organisation for changing audience habits. He says much of the content carried by the affected services will still be available where audiences already use it, including iPlayer and Sounds.

Operational impact across BBC divisions

BBC Three has previously been removed from linear television, returning as a full TV channel in January 2022 after six years online. Since then, it has been associated with successful titles including Fleabag, Normal People and Killing Eve.

The broadcaster says further savings plans are still being prepared, with BBC News director Rachel Jupp due to set out additional measures early next year and other divisions expected to confirm their own plans in the coming months. The latest steps follow earlier savings announcements affecting BBC Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Local and Speech and Sounds.

The measures come alongside other recent retrenchment decisions at the corporation. Over the weekend, the BBC confirmed DIY SOS will be rested next year because of its savings challenges, and it has also cancelled plans for a bespoke studio for The Archers at the Tea Factory in Digbeth, Birmingham.

The IMF projected a contraction in 2026 followed by a strong but uneven rebound in 2027, while urging policymakers to prioritize price stability and rebuild fiscal buffers to withstand further shocks.
