SpaceX network push lifts tower stocks, pressures U.S. telecom shares
SpaceX tower shakeup

Wall Street analysts are drawing a distinction between cell towers and the broader universe of cell sites as SpaceX explores a major wireless infrastructure expansion. That interpretation suggests the company could tap rooftops, billboards and other smaller-footprint locations as it seeks to compete with the Big Three telecom operators in the U.S.

Highlights

  • SpaceX is negotiating access to as many as 80,000 cell sites, signaling a potential large-scale buildout of terrestrial wireless infrastructure beyond satellites.
  • Tower stocks surge, with American Tower up 4% and Crown Castle up 9%, while major telecom shares such as AT&T and T-Mobile fall nearly 8% and over 7%, respectively, on competitive concerns.
  • SpaceX’s recent low-band 800 MHz spectrum acquisition and site leasing efforts could enable integration of Starlink home broadband with outdoor wireless coverage to directly challenge established telecoms.

Cell site strategy broadens infrastructure options

As reported by CNBC, citing Bloomberg, SpaceX is in talks to access as many as 80,000 cell sites, a move that analysts say could reveal how aggressively the company plans to build out its wireless footprint.

In a Friday note, Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng said cell sites are often confused with cell towers, even though the category also includes rooftops, billboards, water tanks, distributed antenna systems and small cells. Citi analyst Michael Rollins said his firm’s scenarios interpret the report as involving more than 80,000 macro sites on colocation structures, while also recognizing that some of the footprint could come from other forms of coverage and capacity, including small cells.

Bernstein analyst Laurent Yoon said large-scale tower lease agreements would reinforce what recent spectrum acquisitions have already indicated, that SpaceX is becoming more willing to pursue owner economics rather than rely on partners. Analysts also see the reported site discussions as part of a broader effort to extend SpaceX’s network ambitions beyond satellite connectivity and into terrestrial wireless infrastructure.

Market reaction highlights telecom threat

Tower stocks are rising as investors assess the potential benefits of new leasing demand from SpaceX. American Tower gains 4% on Friday, while Crown Castle, the company SpaceX is reportedly discussing site access with, jumps 9%.

At the same time, shares of major telecom operators are coming under pressure on concerns that SpaceX could become a more credible competitor. AT & T slides almost 8%, and T-Mobile falls more than 7% as investors weigh the risk of greater rivalry in wireless services.

Analysts say the strategy may pair outdoor network coverage with SpaceX’s residential Starlink service. Earlier this month, the company agreed in a deal with Grain Management to buy low-band 800 MHz spectrum, which can penetrate windows and walls. Pivotal Research Group analyst Jeffrey Wlodarczak wrote earlier this month that much of call and text traffic could run on the 800 MHz coverage layer, while household usage could be offloaded onto Starlink WiFi inside the home.

Even so, analysts and industry executives say building a competitive wireless network at scale remains difficult and capital-intensive. During AT & T’s Oct. 21 earnings call, Chief Executive John Stankey said it takes many years and a huge level of investment to reach the performance levels customers expect.

Our earlier article covered Elon Musk’s claim that SpaceX would reimburse users if Grok makes a financial mistake during a purchase or leaks card details while handling transactions. We noted that, unlike typical AI-agent terms that put liability on users, the pledge raised fresh questions about the scope of coverage and the growing risks as agents take on payments and bookings.
