AM Best affirms Reaseguradora Patria ratings, keeps stable outlook
Patria's ratings affirmed

Mexico's only locally registered reinsurer retains its existing AM Best ratings as it continues to expand internationally from a strong domestic and regional position. The stable outlook reflects expectations that Reaseguradora Patria will sustain profitable operations and strongest risk-adjusted capitalization while executing that growth strategy.

Highlights

  • AM Best affirms Reaseguradora Patria's Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) and all outlooks remain stable as of latest review.
  • Patria Re posts net income of MXN 1.23 billion for 2025, up 23% year-over-year, with a first-half 2026 profit of MXN 508 million and 89.9% combined ratio.
  • Potential rating upgrades hinge on sustained profitability and strong capitalization, while negative actions could follow persistent capital deterioration or major cash withdrawals.

Rating action and financial profile

As reported by AM Best, the agency affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent), the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of "a" (Excellent) and the Mexico National Scale Rating of "aaa.MX" (Exceptional) for Reaseguradora Patria, S.A., and also affirmed the Long-Term ICR of "bbb" (Good) for its ultimate parent, Peña Verde, S.A.B. The outlook on all of the ratings remains stable.

AM Best said the ratings reflect Patria Re's balance sheet strength, which it assesses as strongest, along with adequate operating performance, a neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management. Under AM Best's insurance holding company criteria, Peña Verde's rating reflects standard notching from Patria Re's Long-Term ICR.

Patria Re's strongest balance sheet assessment is supported by strongest risk-adjusted capitalization as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio, low underwriting leverage, a robust reinsurance program with strongly rated counterparties and strong liquidity metrics. AM Best also cited the company's comprehensive ERM framework and deep knowledge of its Latin America markets as support for its stable overseas operations beyond its niche market.

Expansion strategy and rating sensitivities

Founded in 1953, Patria Re has built a strong position in Mexico and other Latin America markets, allowing it to write business selectively and maintain a diversified product portfolio tailored to specific markets. AM Best said that approach has helped the reinsurer produce consistently favorable underwriting results in recent years and maintain strong client relationships across the region.

Despite limits from catastrophe reserve development, Patria Re posts positive bottom-line results in 2025, driven mainly by favorable underwriting performance. The company reports net income of MXN 1.23 billion for the year, up 23% from a year earlier, and records a profitable first six months of 2026 with a bottom-line result of MXN 508 million and a combined ratio of 89.9%.

AM Best said positive rating actions could follow if profitability metrics show a consistent upward trend in line with strong operating performance, while the company preserves its strongest risk-adjusted capitalization and continues to execute its overseas expansion successfully. Negative rating pressure could emerge from sustained deterioration in risk-adjusted capitalization caused either by unfavorable results or a significant cash withdrawal.

Sovereign borrowing risks in a higher-rate environment were the focus of our earlier coverage, as persistent geopolitical shocks and elevated fiscal spending were shown to be eroding governments’ fiscal headroom and increasing refinancing strain. We noted that emerging and frontier markets are particularly exposed because debt-service costs tend to be high relative to narrower revenue bases, while inflation pressures from energy and food price volatility can further weigh on sovereign credit outlooks.
