Silk Road founder calls for clemency for Roger Ver
Roger Ver

Recently pardoned Silk Road darknet marketplace founder Ross Ulbricht has publicly expressed his support for Roger Ver, the founder of Bitcoin.com. Ver is facing serious charges, including tax evasion, which could result in a lengthy prison sentence.

Ulbricht posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), thanking Ver for his support during his imprisonment and urging others to stand by him.

"Roger Ver was there for me when I was down and needed help. Now he needs our support. No one should spend the rest of their life in prison over taxes. Let him simply pay the tax (if any), and be done with it." – Ross Ulbricht.

What Roger Ver is accused of

In April 2023, Ver was arrested in Spain at the request of U.S. authorities, who are seeking his extradition. He has been charged with tax evasion, filing false tax returns, and fraud.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Ver allegedly filed a fraudulent tax return when renouncing his U.S. citizenship in 2014 to obtain Japanese citizenship. Under U.S. tax law, individuals must fully settle their tax obligations before giving up their citizenship.

Prosecutors claim that Ver failed to report significant capital gains from Bitcoin sales and undervalued two companies during his citizenship renunciation. Additionally, they allege that he concealed the sale of 131,000 Bitcoins—worth nearly $240 million in 2017—resulting in an estimated tax shortfall of $48 million. Ver has denied the charges, arguing that the illiquid nature of Bitcoin at the time made it difficult to properly pay the tax.

In December 2023, Ver attempted to have the case dismissed, arguing that U.S. tax laws are vague and unconstitutional. However, facing extradition and a potential maximum sentence of 109 years, he has sought help from high-profile figures.

In a video posted on X on January 26, he made a direct appeal to former U.S. President Donald Trump, stating: "Only Trump's commitment to justice can save me."

It is worth noting that Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht on his first day in office, fulfilling a promise made to the crypto community.
