Waltio crypto tax platform hacked, users warned of scams
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office and France’s national cybercrime unit are investigating a hack of the crypto platform Waltio, which helps crypto investors prepare tax reports. Authorities warn that users affected by the data breach may become targets of scammers offering to move their digital assets under the guise of legitimate security concerns.
According to a notice from French cybersecurity authorities, officials are investigating a data leak from the crypto tax platform Waltio that has affected at least 50,000 users.
Waltio collects client transaction data and calculates total taxable operations, profits, and losses for submission in the required tax reporting format. Given the high volume of transactions and the complexity of tax regulations, Waltio’s automated services are widely used in France and neighboring Belgium.
Security measures must be strengthened
French authorities are currently examining the nature of the stolen data, while local media report that a hacking group known as Shiny Hunters has demanded a ransom from Waltio, threatening to resell the stolen information.
In their cybersecurity notice, authorities advised platform users to strengthen security measures, noting that France has previously seen attempts to kidnap and extort major crypto investors. Users may also be targeted by scammers posing as cyber police officers and urging them to move assets to so-called “secure” addresses, while in reality attempting to steal cryptocurrency.
