Security first: Ethereum as a “world computer”

Buterin described Ethereum not as a high-speed payment network competing on transactions per second, but as a global computer designed for verifiable data and shared digital assets, where users maintain control over their own security.

This vision stands in contrast to blockchains such as Solana that prioritize raw throughput. Buterin emphasized that trust and verifiability remain Ethereum’s fundamental strengths. He stressed that anyone should be able to verify the chain, even on basic devices: “Even your phones and IoT devices should be able to verify the chain.”

Three-phase development plan

Buterin presented a clear three-stage roadmap for Ethereum’s evolution.

In the short term, the network will focus on increasing the gas limit, rolling out zkEVM technology—which enables more complex computations while preserving full verifiability—and beginning preparations for the post-quantum era.

In the medium term, the goal is to reduce transaction finality time from the current roughly 16 minutes to just 10–20 seconds.

The long-term vision includes full quantum resistance, formal verification of the entire protocol, and maximum decentralization. Buterin highlighted that zkVM technology will allow users to verify the blockchain without needing powerful hardware to execute every operation.

Why this is important for Ethereum

Buterin’s remarks come at a sensitive moment for the broader crypto ecosystem following a major security incident. His message reinforces Ethereum’s long-standing commitment to building slowly but securely, prioritizing decentralization and verifiability over speed.

While critics often point to Ethereum’s relatively modest throughput compared with newer chains, Buterin continues to advocate for an architecture that can withstand future threats, including those posed by quantum computing.

A deliberate approach to blockchain evolution

By placing security and verifiability at the center of Ethereum’s development, Buterin is doubling down on the network’s original design principles.

The roadmap suggests that Ethereum intends to scale responsibly while preparing for technological challenges that lie years ahead.
