Banking giant Standard Chartered has launched spot Bitcoin and Ethereum trading for institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates. The service is available through the bank’s entity regulated by the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).
Standard Chartered said it has become the first global bank to offer institutional digital asset trading in the region, as well as the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to provide such a service.

Clients will be able to buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) through Standard Chartered’s electronic trading channels integrated into its existing banking platforms.
The new service expands the bank’s crypto business in the UAE. In September 2024, Standard Chartered launched digital asset custody services in the country.
In June, the bank also signed an agreement with crypto exchange CoinMENA. The partnership allows the platform to use Standard Chartered’s infrastructure for fiat deposits and withdrawals, client money accounts, and transaction management through virtual accounts.
Other companies are also showing growing interest in the UAE market. In August, trading platform Capital.com obtained a virtual asset license and announced plans to launch spot crypto trading. In July, neobank Revolut received in-principle approval from Dubai regulator VARA to provide crypto services in the region.
Over the past few years, the UAE has become one of the world’s major crypto business hubs. Dubai has a dedicated virtual asset regulator, VARA, while the DIFC operates under the DFSA regulatory framework, which updated its rules for crypto tokens in January 2026. Regulators are actively seeking to attract digital asset companies while requiring them to comply with rules on custody, risk management, disclosure, and investor protection.
Another factor is the UAE’s business environment. Dubai has become a major financial and technology hub with access to capital, skilled professionals, and markets across the Middle East and Asia. Companies operating in free economic zones may also qualify for a 0% corporate tax rate on qualifying income if they meet the relevant requirements. As a result, the UAE offers a rare combination of relatively clear crypto regulation, developed financial infrastructure, and an attractive tax environment.
As a reminder, Standard Chartered became the first bank to start using the HKDAP stablecoin in Hong Kong.
