Why does Hunter Biden need his own memecoin?

Donald Trump has shown that a famous political name can be worth extraordinary amounts of money in crypto. Now Hunter Biden is turning one of the most controversial episodes of his life into a memecoin called LAPTOP. Is it political satire, another way to monetize fame?

Hunter Biden turns the laptop scandal into a memecoin

Hunter Biden plans to launch LAPTOP on September 9 on Base, the Ethereum layer-two network developed by Coinbase. The token takes its name from the laptop that became a major political controversy during the 2020 U.S. presidential election and exposed details of Biden's business dealings and private life.

The project describes the token as a way for Biden to “reclaim the narrative.” There will be 1 billion LAPTOP tokens, with 30% of the supply allocated to the founders, including Biden. Another 20% is allocated to airdrops, including to some wallets that lost money on Trump's TRUMP memecoin.

The Trump connection goes further. Part of the token supply is tied to predictions whose outcomes determine whether tokens are burned or donated to charity. One asks whether LAPTOP's fully diluted valuation will eventually exceed that of TRUMP.

Trump proved political crypto can make serious money

Trump launched TRUMP shortly before returning to the White House in January 2025. Its market capitalization briefly approached $15 billion before the token lost most of its value and fell roughly 97% from its peak.

Trump's own crypto business has had a very different outcome. His latest financial disclosure showed more than $1.4 billion in crypto-related income in 2025, including about $635 million in royalties from an entity believed to be behind TRUMP and more than $500 million from World Liberty Financial.

There is no evidence that Hunter Biden launched LAPTOP because he saw Trump's earnings and wanted his share. But Trump has demonstrated that political fame, loyalty and controversy can be converted directly into a tradable crypto asset, creating an obvious precedent for anyone whose name already commands attention.

From political scandal to tradable asset

Few things associated with Hunter Biden carry more recognition than the laptop that has followed him through years of political controversy. Its contents fueled news reports, congressional investigations, political attacks and countless memes, largely leaving Biden with little control over what it represented. LAPTOP now attempts to reverse that dynamic by making the controversy itself part of the product.

That approach fits naturally with memecoin economics. A memecoin can derive much of its value from attention, community and traders' willingness to speculate on a recognizable idea. Hunter Biden already has the kind of name recognition and controversy that most new crypto projects have to work hard to generate.

Biden has also become increasingly positive about crypto. “Decentralized digital currency and the blockchain are the inevitable future,” he wrote on X in June. He has nevertheless criticized the Trump family's World Liberty Financial venture, putting him in an unusual position: criticizing one political family's crypto business while attaching his own name and personal history to a speculative token.

Crypto traders are not necessarily buying the joke

LAPTOP has already attracted resistance from parts of the crypto community before its first official trade. Kraken deleted a social media post promoting the token following criticism, while journalist Andrew Callaghan said neither he nor his Channel 5 media company was involved with the project after a mailing list associated with him was included among groups eligible for an airdrop.

A Base executive also stressed that LAPTOP has no partnership with Coinbase or Base. The reactions suggest that the Biden name may be enough to generate attention before launch, but the project is not receiving an uncomplicated welcome from the crypto industry.

Could politicians be stopped from launching memecoins?

LAPTOP arrives as U.S. lawmakers debate whether public officials should be allowed to issue digital assets. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has called for elected officials and their spouses to be prohibited from issuing or sponsoring them, while proposed crypto ethics rules have sought similar restrictions on senior federal officials.

Hunter Biden, however, holds no public office, so restrictions aimed at elected officials would not automatically prevent him from launching a memecoin. But LAPTOP broadens the ethical question because the commercial value of politics does not necessarily stop with politicians themselves. Their relatives can also have famous names and large audiences whose value may be difficult to separate from politics.

Does America need another political memecoin?

Whether traders will value LAPTOP will become clearer once it starts trading. But Hunter Biden does not need to match Trump's crypto earnings for the experiment to be revealing. The fact that one of the most damaging controversies attached to his name can now be packaged, branded and traded shows how far political memecoins have moved beyond simple internet jokes.

That creates a problem lawmakers are only beginning to confront. Restrictions on elected officials may address the most obvious conflicts of interest, but LAPTOP shows that political celebrity extends well beyond officeholders themselves. The harder question is not simply who should be allowed to launch a token, but when monetizing a famous name becomes monetizing political influence.
