Bitcoin rally accelerates as short liquidations near $648 million
Bitcoin rally fueled by squeezes

Bitcoin pushes toward $85,000 on Monday as leveraged short sellers are forced to cover positions during a broad crypto market advance. The move comes with rising open interest and trading volume, indicating traders continue adding exposure rather than retreating after the squeeze.

Highlights

  • Bitcoin trades at $84,984, up 5.4% in 24 hours, driven by $647.9 million in short liquidations out of $746.6 million total.
  • Open interest rises 7.59% to $156 billion and 24-hour crypto trading volume jumps 39% to $224 billion, as liquidated positions are rapidly replaced.
  • Annualized perpetual funding rates surge to nearly 60%, with heavily leveraged long exposure creating elevated volatility risk and vulnerability to a long squeeze.

Liquidations and leverage drive the move

As reported by CoinDesk, bitcoin trades at $84,984 in the late European morning, up 5.4% over 24 hours and extending its break above the $82,284 high reached on Sept. 4.

The rally appears to be driven mainly by forced buying rather than a clean wave of new conviction. Data from Coinglass shows $746.6 million in positions are liquidated over 24 hours, with shorts accounting for $647.9 million of that total, while another $159.9 million is wiped out in the past hour alone, about 95% of it on the short side.

Bitcoin shorts make up $277.5 million of the 24-hour liquidations and ether shorts account for $122.8 million. Open interest across the market rises 7.59% to $156 billion despite those closures, while 24-hour trading volume climbs 39% to $224 billion, a sign participants are replacing liquidated positions instead of stepping back.

Broader crypto gains raise volatility risk

A wider market rebound accompanies bitcoin's advance, with 95 of the 100 constituents in the CoinDesk 100 index trading higher on the day and the index itself up 3.0%. The leadership of the move also shifts from Friday, when small-cap tokens and DeFi assets outperform.

In derivatives, the taker long-short volume ratio in crypto futures leans nearly 53% toward bullish positions. Bitcoin's total futures open interest tops 700,000 BTC for the first time in weeks, pointing to stronger demand for leverage as spot prices rise.

Binance whale account data shows large traders are executing market buy and sell orders at a roughly even pace intraday, but aggregate derivatives positioning still suggests heavily leveraged long exposure among big accounts. Annualized perpetual funding rates spike to nearly 60%, signaling crowded long positioning that could increase volatility and leave the market vulnerable to a long squeeze if momentum reverses.

Our earlier article on Weiss Ratings’ model-driven crypto portfolio service explained how the firm pitches coin-selection and market-timing signals as an alternative to simple Bitcoin buy-and-hold. We noted the aggressive outperformance claims and the lack of independent performance verification, while placing the offering in the wider context of retail-focused advisory products and shifting altcoin leadership during the broader crypto rally.
