Treasury yields keep pressure on risk assets

The main external risk for BTC now comes from the global bond market. Yesterday, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed to 5.344%, its highest level since 2002, while 30-year yields also reached multi-year highs. This is usually an unfavorable combination for Bitcoin, as higher risk-free yields increase the opportunity cost of holding assets without fixed cash flows and tighten financial conditions at the same time.

The situation stabilized somewhat on the morning of October 2, with the 10-year yield retreating to around 5.23–5.25%, which may have helped risk assets recover. However, the bond market remains highly sensitive to inflation, fiscal deficits, and the future path of interest rates, so another move higher in yields could quickly worsen the picture for BTC as well.

U.S. jobs report could set next direction

The main catalyst today will be the September U.S. labor market report. Consensus for Nonfarm Payrolls is around 84,000–90,000 new jobs after 162,000 in August, while the unemployment rate is expected to remain near 4.1%. For Bitcoin, the reaction in U.S. Treasuries may matter more than the employment figure itself.

A strong report could revive expectations for a more hawkish Fed, push yields higher, and once again increase pressure on the crypto market. Weak data, by contrast, could pull yields lower and support an attempt by BTC to consolidate above $86,500, followed by a test of $87,000 and higher levels.

ETF flows fail to confirm breakout

Flows into spot Bitcoin ETFs are also sending a more mixed signal. U.S. funds recorded around $2.65 billion in net inflows during September, pointing to continued institutional demand. However, the past few days have been weaker: net outflows of around $148.7 million were recorded on September 30, followed by another roughly $92.9 million on October 1.

As a result, the current BTC rally is taking place despite weaker short-term ETF flows rather than because of a new wave of strong capital inflows. Therefore, the current move should still not be viewed as a resumption of the broader uptrend. BTC may remain in a consolidation phase and trade within a wider range, but, as noted in BTC/USD holds range as rate outlook and ETF flows pull in opposite directions, still inside its recent local high and low.
