Gate teams up with Visa to expand crypto payments
Gate and Visa plan crypto card launch in 40+ markets

Cryptocurrency exchange Gate has partnered with Visa to introduce a payment card that allows customers to spend digital assets at merchants accepting Visa. The planned rollout across more than 40 countries and territories marks another attempt to connect cryptocurrency accounts with conventional payment networks.

Highlights

  • Gate plans a Visa card rollout in 40+ markets.
  • Crypto will convert to fiat during purchases.
  • Card access depends on local eligibility rules.

According to a press release issued by Gate, the card will automatically convert eligible digital assets into fiat currency when customers make purchases. Users will be able to apply for and manage the card through the Gate app, although the company has not specified a complete launch schedule or confirmed which cryptocurrencies will be supported in each market.

Gate brings crypto balances into everyday payments

The card is designed to work for online purchases and in-store transactions through Visa's existing acceptance network. Rather than requiring merchants to receive cryptocurrency, the payment process converts funds from a customer's Gate account into conventional currency. This allows businesses to accept payments through their usual systems without introducing separate cryptocurrency settlement arrangements.

Visa says its network covers more than 175 million merchant locations across over 200 countries and territories. However, the Gate card will initially target a much smaller group of markets, with access dependent on local eligibility requirements and service availability. The companies have not provided a detailed breakdown of conversion charges, transaction fees, or other potential costs.

Gate expands its financial services platform

The partnership follows the introduction of Gate Money, an application feature combining cryptocurrency holdings with traditional financial services. It brings together digital assets, fiat currencies, stocks, exchange-traded funds, gold and payment functions within the Gate app. Eligible customers can also apply for bank accounts in their own names and use the platform for transfers, conversions, and other transactions.

Gate, founded in 2013, reports more than 61 million users and supports trading in over 5,300 cryptocurrencies. The company is using that customer base to expand beyond exchange services, although the announcement does not disclose expected card adoption, transaction volumes, or revenue projections. Gate Money is available through version 8.39.0 of the company's mobile application.

Crypto cards face a growing payments market

The launch comes as cryptocurrency-linked cards become more common within established payment networks. Visa reports that more than 160 stablecoin-linked card programs are operating globally, with payment volume increasing nearly 200% year over year. Those figures suggest growing activity, though they do not establish how widely individual cards are used for routine purchases.

For Gate, the commercial opportunity lies in encouraging customers to use exchange balances for spending rather than keeping them solely for trading. The practical appeal will depend on conversion costs, supported currencies, and local restrictions. With no detailed rollout timetable announced, the partnership's impact on everyday payments remains to be seen.
