Cardano Foundation spins out Veridian, tokenizes equity on Cardano
Cardano Foundation is separating its digital identity project Veridian into an independent Swiss company as it expands blockchain-based identity tools for institutions and software agents. The move also creates an early live use case for Cardano's new CIP-0113 programmable-token standard through the tokenization of most of Veridian's 1 million shares.
Highlights
- Veridian, spun out from Cardano Foundation, tokenizes the majority of its 1 million shares using Cardano's new CIP-0113 standard, marking the first use of onchain equity issuance on the network.
- Veridian's digital identity wallet is live on iOS and Android, incorporating Utah's digital-identity requirements set by SB 275 and targeting compliance and AI-agent credentialing markets.
- Cardano advances its commercial programmable-token applications as Veridian enables agent verification and credential revocation, supporting projects like Masumi, an AI-agent payment network built with Serviceplan Group and NMKR.
Spinout structure and onchain equity rollout
As reported by CoinDesk, Veridian is launched as a standalone Switzerland-based company focused on digital identity tools for governments, businesses and AI agents. The Cardano Foundation says the company is using Cardano's newly introduced CIP-0113 standard to tokenize most of its 1 million shares, making it the first company to place its own equity on the new framework.Frederik Gregaard, chief executive of the Cardano Foundation and chair of Veridian, says the company plans to seek strategic investors in 2027. He says CIP-0113 allows issuers to attach rules to tokens, including controls over who may receive them and, where required, whether they can be frozen, seized or transferred.
Veridian is led by Thomas A. Mayfield, a blockchain engineer who previously oversaw decentralized trust and identity solutions at the Cardano Foundation. The company uses the open standards KERI and ACDC to issue digital credentials designed to let people, companies and software agents prove identity or authority without relying on a central database.
Identity market expansion and Cardano ecosystem impact
The separation gives Cardano a commercial example for its programmable-token model as the network pushes into identity and compliance-oriented applications. Veridian's wallet is already live on iOS and Android, and the foundation says the company has mapped Utah's digital-identity requirements after the state's SB 275 took effect in May and established a State Endorsed Digital Identity Program.Gregaard says the Utah framework, together with rising demand to verify AI agents acting for individuals or companies, supports the decision to move Veridian outside the nonprofit foundation. He says the standalone structure should help the business address a growing market where AI agents also need verifiable identity.
That positioning already extends into Cardano's broader commercial ecosystem through Masumi, an AI-agent payment and identity network built by Serviceplan Group and NMKR on Cardano. The companies say Veridian enables counterparties to verify an agent's credentials before making a payment and to revoke them if the agent is compromised.
Our earlier article on the surge in European startup investment in Q3 2026 noted that funding rebounded to a four-year high as AI companies captured the bulk of deployed capital. It also highlighted how the quarter was dominated by late-stage mega-rounds across multiple countries, signaling sustained investor appetite for capital-intensive deep-tech and sovereign-AI initiatives.
