Anthropic to scan crypto companies

Anthropic has introduced OSS Scanner, a service that uses artificial intelligence to detect vulnerabilities in software code. Ethereum client developer Nethermind and Bitcoin wallet ZEUS were among the first to apply for security scans.

According to an announcement on Anthropic's website, the service is designed for open-source projects and provides reports on potential vulnerabilities generated by the company's most powerful AI models, including Claude Mythos.

Previously, Anthropic had already been scanning open-source software for security issues, but the results were shared with developers only after human review. This process was time-consuming and delayed the fixing of identified vulnerabilities.

The new service will allow participants to receive reports immediately after automated code analysis. This will help developers identify and fix vulnerabilities faster without waiting for manual reviews to be completed.

Which crypto projects want to use Anthropic's AI?

Nethermind, the developer of an Ethereum network client, was among the first projects to apply for the program. The company requested a security scan of its entire repository to identify potential vulnerabilities in its software code.

The developers of ZEUS, a self-custodial wallet for Bitcoin and the Lightning Network, also requested a security review of their application. They want to focus particularly on vulnerabilities that could affect payments, users' private keys, and connections to Lightning services.

Another application came from VirtEngine, a decentralized cloud computing platform built using the Cosmos SDK.

Other applicants include developers of AI assistants, AI agent security tools, cloud storage services, and software for managing energy systems.

At the time of publication, none of the applications had been approved. Anthropic plans to evaluate projects individually, considering their importance to digital infrastructure, the number of users and dependent services, and their potential exposure to remote attacks.

Hackers are increasingly using artificial intelligence

Crypto companies' interest in Anthropic's program comes amid a growing number of cyberattacks involving artificial intelligence. Modern AI models allow attackers to analyze software code, identify weaknesses, and develop exploits more quickly.

In August, Bitcoin swap service Boltz was forced to suspend operations following a series of AI-assisted attacks. The company said attackers were developing new exploits faster than its developers could patch the vulnerabilities they discovered.

Crypto payment service PayPerQ also reported repeated attacks that it suspected were powered by artificial intelligence.

Anthropic acknowledges that AI development could give attackers an advantage in the near term. Finding and exploiting vulnerabilities is becoming cheaper and faster, while verifying security issues and fixing them still requires human involvement.

The OSS Scanner program aims to narrow this gap. However, access will not be automatic. Anthropic intends to select projects based on their importance to user security and the resilience of digital infrastructure.

Why developers trust Anthropic

Anthropic is known not only as the developer of the Claude family of AI models but also as a company that places particular emphasis on artificial intelligence safety. It was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, including Dario and Daniela Amodei. From the beginning, the company made the safety and controllability of powerful AI models one of its main priorities.

Anthropic's reputation is also supported by its partnerships with major technology companies, including Amazon and Google, which have invested billions of dollars in its development. The company also works extensively with enterprise clients that prioritize reliability, data protection, and control over AI use. For cryptocurrency projects handling user funds and private keys, these factors may be particularly important.

As a reminder, Anthropic is expanding its support program for AI startups.
