Ethereum staking reaches record as yields decline, Solana activity expands
Staking hits record high

Crypto staking volumes continue to rise in the third quarter of 2026 as more investors lock tokens into blockchain networks despite lower returns. The shift leaves Ethereum and Solana with record participation levels, while newly issued tokens still account for most staking rewards.

Highlights

  • Ethereum staking reaches 43.8 million ETH (36% of supply) at September-end, while annualized yields decline to 2.63% from 2.81%.
  • Bitmine's staked ETH grows over 1,000% to 5.07 million by Sept. 27, driving institutional flows as newly issued ETH comprise over 96% of yields.
  • Solana active staking hits 440.5 million SOL (69% of supply), transaction fees rise 49% to $76 million, and tokenized equities volume jumps 45% to over $6.9 billion.

Quarterly staking trends and reward pressure

As reported by The Block, citing Bitwise in its latest quarterly staking report, Ethereum staking reaches 43.8 million ETH at the end of September, equal to nearly 36% of total supply, while annualized staking yields average 2.63%, down from 2.81% in the prior quarter.

Bitwise says Ethereum records net staking inflows of just under 2 million ETH in the third quarter, marking its sixth straight quarter of positive flows. The report says rewards are spread across a larger pool of staked ETH, lowering the yield earned on each token as participation rises.

Institutional staking remains a major driver of those flows. Bitwise points to Bitmine, the Ethereum treasury company led by Tom Lee, whose staking increases by more than 1,000% from 410,000 ETH in December to 5.07 million ETH as of Sept. 27.

Newly issued ETH makes up more than 96% of Ethereum's staking yield, with the remainder coming from transaction tips and maximal extractable value, or MEV. Over the same period, Ethereum network revenue falls to about $40.6 million from $63 million in the second quarter.

Solana transaction growth supports network fees

Solana's active staking also reaches a record in the third quarter, rising to 440.5 million SOL, or 69% of total supply. As with Ethereum, gross staking yields fall by about 6%, with newly issued tokens accounting for 90% of returns.

The network processes 14.2 billion transactions, up 45% from the second quarter, while average transaction costs remain mostly flat. Transaction fees climb 49% to $76 million, driven mainly by memecoin trading, and tokenized equities trading volume rises 45% to more than $6.9 billion.

Our earlier report on Q3 cybersecurity funding showed that total investment rose to $6.8 billion mainly because of larger late-stage rounds, even as the number of deals declined. We also noted that AI-driven and identity security companies captured much of the capital, while big-ticket M&A signaled ongoing consolidation across the sector.
