Bitcoin derivatives market shifts toward options as risk management expands
Bitcoin options are taking a larger share of the cryptocurrency’s derivatives market, pointing to a broader shift from directional speculation toward risk management tools. The change comes as ETF-linked options, led by BlackRock’s IBIT, account for an increasing portion of activity and add depth to the overall market structure.
Highlights
- Bitcoin options accounted for just under 60% of derivatives open interest last week, up from around 50% at the start of 2024, per Volmex.
- Options linked to U.S. bitcoin ETFs reached $36 billion in open interest as of Friday, with BlackRock’s IBIT comprising nearly $35 billion.
- The total bitcoin options market stands at roughly $76 billion, and the full derivatives market totals approximately $129 billion including perpetual and dated futures.
Options gain share in bitcoin trading
As reported by Coindesk, citing Volmex, the issuer of the bitcoin volatility index BVIV, options accounted for just under 60% of open interest across all bitcoin derivatives last week, up from around 50% at the start of the year. That measure covers bitcoin futures, perpetual futures, and both bitcoin-native and ETF-based options, and open interest reflects the total value of contracts that traders have opened and not yet closed.Volmex describes the increase as a structural shift in bitcoin markets, indicating that traders are increasingly using options to hedge holdings, generate income, or position for large price moves without taking on borrowed exposure. Because options are priced on expected volatility, their wider use also aligns with the role of gauges such as BVIV in tracking market expectations.
As of Friday, options tied to U.S. bitcoin exchange-traded funds represented about $36 billion in open interest, with BlackRock’s IBIT making up nearly $35 billion of that total. Including options on crypto-native platforms lifts the bitcoin options market to roughly $76 billion, while adding perpetual futures and dated futures brings the overall bitcoin derivatives market to about $129 billion.
Our earlier analysis of the Nasdaq 100’s volatility explained how AI supply-chain concerns and higher financing costs drove sharp swings and kept the index under its 20- and 50-day moving averages. It also highlighted mixed momentum signals and an oversold setup, with traders watching key resistance around 29,868 as a potential trigger for the next directional move.
