Bitcoin retreat tests support as AI-driven tech weakness weighs on crypto markets
Bitcoin faces tech-driven test

Crypto markets are turning cautious again after bitcoin fails to hold a breakout above $84,000 and slips back toward a closely watched support zone in Asian trading on Thursday. The reversal comes as weaker tech futures, soft corporate outlooks and renewed concern over artificial intelligence spending pressure broader risk sentiment across equities and digital assets.

Highlights

  • Bitcoin reverses a late-Wednesday rally, falling over $2,000 in six hours to trade near the $82,500 level viewed as critical support.
  • Broader risk-off sentiment intensifies as Tesla drops 3%, Lam Research falls 7%, Nasdaq 100 futures lose 1.1%, and S&P 500 futures decline 0.5%.
  • Asian equity markets weaken with South Korea's Kospi down 2.2%, China's CSI 300 falling 1.7%, and Alibaba leading Chinese e-commerce stocks lower on regulatory concerns.

Bitcoin reversal and market moves

As reported by CoinDesk, bitcoin trades just below $82,800 after a brief late-Wednesday rally to nearly $85,000 fades, bringing the token back near the $82,500 level that some analysts view as critical for near-term direction.

After clearing $84,000, a ceiling that turned bitcoin back on Oct. 13 and 14, the cryptocurrency reaches about $84,800 before reversing sharply. Within roughly six hours, it falls by more than $2,000 to around $82,600, unwinding momentum from the breakout attempt.

Among major tokens, Zcash stands out with a gain of nearly 3%, while XRP edges modestly higher. HYPE leads declines with a drop of about 3%, Dogecoin loses 2% and Solana falls around 1%, while ether, BNB and TRX slip by less than 1%.

Tech outlooks deepen risk-off mood

Market pressure extends beyond crypto as disappointing corporate signals from major technology names weigh on sentiment toward risk assets. Tesla falls 3% after hours after cutting its capital-spending forecast, while Lam Research drops 7% on a weak outlook.

Meta rises 2% after increasing its AI spending plans, but that is not enough to ease investor concerns about the broader AI trade. Nasdaq 100 futures lose 1.1% and S&P 500 futures fall 0.5%, reinforcing caution across markets.

Asian equities also come under pressure. South Korea's Kospi drops 2.2% as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix retreat, while China's CSI 300 falls 1.7% and moves toward bear market territory. Alibaba leads Chinese e-commerce stocks lower after the government calls for tighter quality control, and oil prices rise again as Middle East tensions intensify.

In our earlier analysis of the S&P 500’s slide amid tech-sector weakness, we noted that doubts about the durability of AI spending and rising borrowing costs were weighing on risk appetite. The index was trading below key short-term moving averages, with analysts flagging critical support/resistance levels and warning that volatility could persist unless buyers regained conviction.
