Crypto sector prepares quantum security upgrades as wallet risks come into focus
Quantum security for crypto

Quantum computing is emerging as a long-term cybersecurity issue for digital assets, pushing crypto developers to examine how wallets, signatures and transactions can remain protected. The risk is not immediate, but the prospect that future machines could break current cryptographic methods is shaping upgrade plans across Bitcoin and altcoin networks.

Highlights

  • Developers across major crypto networks are researching quantum-resistant security upgrades, with experts warning quantum threats to wallets may emerge by 2030.
  • Ethereum is exploring larger cryptographic signatures like Falcon to protect nearly 1.8 million daily transactions, while Aptos and others propose alternatives prioritizing security at the expense of transaction speed and network costs.
  • Blockstream has tested quantum-secure transactions for Bitcoin, but Bitcoin's conservative development culture means upgrades will undergo extensive testing and may see slower implementation versus altcoin networks.

Network upgrade plans take shape

As reported by Weiss Ratings, developers across the crypto market are already studying how to strengthen blockchain security before so-called Q-Day, the point at which a quantum computer could derive private keys from public ones and put wallets at risk.

Current crypto systems rely on public and private key pairs whose mathematical relationship remains impractical for conventional computers to crack. The article says that timeline could change as quantum machines improve, with some experts warning such capabilities may emerge around 2030, while others expect the process to take much longer.

Among altcoins, Ethereum is exploring changes to transaction approval and to tools used for moving coins and interacting with applications. Weiss Ratings says the network, which handles nearly 1.8 million daily transactions after a 41% year-over-year increase, is considering larger signature formats such as Falcon, while other projects including Aptos have proposed much larger alternatives that favor security over transaction speed.

Those changes carry trade-offs because quantum-resistant signatures require more space, potentially increasing transaction sizes, data loads and network costs. The article notes that many of these measures remain at the proposal or research stage, and that the industry has yet to reach a consensus on a single technical standard for quantum protection.

Bitcoin caution and broader market implications

Bitcoin developers are also testing defenses, including work intended to reduce how often public keys are exposed and research into replacing current digital signatures with alternatives that are harder for quantum systems to break. Weiss Ratings says Blockstream has already tested such transactions on a live Bitcoin-based network, showing that practical experiments are underway.

Bitcoin's development culture, however, remains more conservative than that of many altcoin networks. That slower approach can delay approval and implementation of major upgrades, but it also gives developers more time to test changes on a network that secures large amounts of investor wealth.

For the broader digital asset sector, the analysis points to execution rather than announcements as the main issue for investors to watch. Key questions include whether networks are testing new security tools, how they plan to protect older wallets and whether they can absorb the extra costs that quantum-resistant systems may bring.

Our earlier report on Q3 2026 cybersecurity funding highlighted how investor demand stayed strong even as total deal counts fell, with bigger late-stage rounds pushing global funding to $6.8 billion. We also noted that AI-driven and identity security startups attracted much of the capital, while large acquisitions signaled ongoing consolidation as businesses ramp up defenses against fast-evolving threats.
