DTCC unit launches tokenization service for securities settlement
DTCC unveils tokenization

Digital asset infrastructure is moving deeper into mainstream market plumbing as The Depository Trust Company begins offering tokenized versions of securities held in custody. The new service allows eligible users to move between traditional and tokenized formats while keeping the same ownership rights and investor protections tied to the underlying assets.

Highlights

  • DTCC subsidiary The Depository Trust Company launched DTCC Tokenization Service, enabling eligible users to mint tokenized representations of securities held at DTC.
  • Twenty clients, including JPMorgan, Fidelity Investments, Citadel Securities, and Citi, have signed agreements for the new tokenization service.
  • DTC, holding over $114 trillion in assets under custody, plans a full launch of tokenized securities trading in October 2026 after a July 2026 pilot, following SEC no-action relief in December 2025.

Service rollout and client adoption

As reported by Cointelegraph, citing The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, its subsidiary The Depository Trust Company has launched DTCC Tokenization Service, or DTS, to let eligible users mint tokenized representations of securities held at DTC.

The company says the service converts securities between traditional and tokenized forms that can be transferred to digital wallets. DTCC says the tokenized versions retain the same ownership rights and investor protections as the conventional securities they represent.

DTCC does not explain which users qualify for access. The post-trade market infrastructure provider says 20 clients have signed agreements for the service, including Alpaca, Citadel Securities, Citi, Clear Street, DriveWealth, Fidelity Investments, Interchange Clearing and JPMorgan.

Regulatory backdrop and market implications

DTC holds more than $114 trillion in assets under custody, including stocks and exchange-traded funds, giving the initiative potential significance for broader securities market adoption of tokenization. The company says the platform creates a practical path for bringing tokenized securities into regulated financial market workflows.

In December 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued a no-action letter saying it would not recommend enforcement action against DTCC's subsidiary in connection with the proposed tokenization program. In May, DTCC said it planned a full launch of tokenized securities trading in October 2026 after a pilot in July 2026.

The service is currently integrated with Canton Network and DTCC's Besu private network, with plans to add more blockchain networks in 2027. The move adds to momentum in the financial sector as large market operators test how tokenized securities can fit into existing custody, settlement and investor protection frameworks.

In our earlier coverage of the S&P 500’s push toward the 8,000 level, we noted that markets were becoming more sensitive to whether third-quarter earnings could justify lofty valuations amid higher oil prices, elevated Treasury yields, and political uncertainty. The piece also highlighted growing concentration risk, with megacaps driving index performance while market breadth weakened—leaving equities more vulnerable to disappointment from a small set of leaders.
