Space tourism expands as Blue Origin adopts cryptocurrency payments
Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin begins accepting cryptocurrency payments
Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin has announced a partnership with payment firm Shift4 Payments, Inc., stating that customers will now be able to pay for space travel using cryptocurrency and stablecoins.
“Together with Blue Origin, we are making space accessible to explorers worldwide. This partnership will allow adventure enthusiasts to book the trip of a lifetime, regardless of their preferred payment method — all with a simple and convenient interface,” said Shift4 CEO Taylor Lauber.
The new payment option is now available for all upcoming bookings of commercial spaceflights aboard the New Shepard spacecraft.
Convenience for potential clients
Demand for short space tourism flights — allowing passengers to rise above the Kármán line, experience weightlessness, and view Earth from above in just minutes — is very high.
More than 75 people have already flown aboard the New Shepard capsule, including Tron cryptocurrency company founder Justin Sun in the latest mission. Recently, rumors surfaced that Binance founder and billionaire Changpeng “CZ” Zhao may take a similar flight.
While the worlds of space technology and crypto finance have often intersected, the integration of crypto payments marks an important step forward for financing space tourism and advancing space technology.
