Highlights

  • MSCI began a review considering Indonesia's removal from its emerging market indices due to concerns over governance and market access.
  • This sparked rapid capital outflows and further weakened the Rupiah, with Bank Indonesia intervening in forex and bond markets.
  • AUD/IDR is capped by strong downside momentum and technical resistance at Rp12,555, with a five-day forecast of Rp12,032 to Rp13,032 and high probability of a decline.

Indonesian asset outflows as MSCI consultation triggers intervention

MSCI launched a consultation to consider reclassifying Indonesia from emerging market to standalone status in its indices due to ongoing concerns about market governance and investability. This prompted sharp outflows from Indonesian assets and renewed depreciation of the Rupiah. Bank Indonesia committed to intervening in forex and bond markets in response, adding pressure and volatility to IDR currency pairs including AUD/IDR.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, views the AUD/IDR advance as constrained and fragile. He notes technical weakness with strong sell signals from both MACD and ADX, and highlights the inability to break above the 50-day moving average. Ongoing volatility from the MSCI consultation and sustained outflows signal persistent pressure on the Rupiah. Kharitonov doubts the effectiveness of Bank Indonesia’s interventions in restoring confidence. "Risks are skewed to the downside, and any rally will likely be sold into until structural issues resolve," he warns.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, focuses on the bigger picture and sees near-term dislocations as potential entry points. He believes Bank Indonesia's commitment and resilient macro fundamentals can attract value investors following initial outflows. Despite technical headwinds, Karapetjanc expects AUD/IDR to find support amid temporary volatility. "Market offers opportunity — bullish structure remains intact given strong policy response and scope for renewed inflows," he states.
Parshwa Turakhiya, analyst, observes sentiment-driven volatility following MSCI’s reclassification talk. He points out that AUD/IDR is squeezed between crucial support and resistance with negative momentum but intraday buyers pressing their case. Turakhiya sees room for tactical trades, favoring range setups over directional bets for now. "Short-term players should watch the Rp12,469 and Rp12,555 levels for breakout signals — swift moves could emerge from this squeeze," he advises.

Negative momentum prevails as resistance holds despite intraday buying

AUD/IDR is trading above its 20-day moving average at Rp12,469 and above the 200-day moving average at Rp12,415, but remains below the 50-day moving average at Rp12,588. Support is seen near Rp12,469, with resistance at the intraday high of Rp12,555. Momentum signals remain negative, with both the MACD and ADX generating strong sell signals. The RSI sits at 40.98 and forecasts 'Sell' just above oversold territory, while Stochastic RSI and CCI are neutral. Bull/Bear Power (BBP) is positive at 35.8, indicating intraday buying control and a potential overbought condition, yet the Awesome Oscillator does not confirm the move higher. Moderate intraday volatility stands at 0.98%.

Earlier, analysts noted that AUD/IDR demonstrated resilience amid central bank interventions and consolidation within a sideways trading pattern. The current analysis underscores a decisive shift to dominant downside momentum, with traders advised to watch for a potential acceleration of losses if support at Rp12,469 fails to hold.
