Highlights

  • UK Consumer Price Index data exceeded expectations, increasing concern over persistent inflation and the Bank of England's policy outlook.
  • Public sector net borrowing in the UK increased, intensifying fiscal pressures and contributing to pound weakness.
  • GBP/JPY remains under bearish technical pressure below key averages, with a projected range of ¥209.77 to ¥211.87 and a 74% probability of moving lower.

Inflation concerns and fiscal strain drive pound losses post-data

UK Consumer Price Index data released Wednesday came in stronger than expected, raising market concerns over inflation trends and the Bank of England's policy stance, according to FXStreet. Alongside this, a further increase in UK public sector net borrowing underscored fiscal pressures and weighed on the Pound, as reported by FXStreet. On the Yen side, a Bank of Japan deputy underscored ongoing inflation risks, maintaining stability for the currency as market participants looked for more clarity on Japan's monetary policy.

Downside momentum persists as GBP/JPY faces technical resistance

On the technical front, GBP/JPY remains capped below the MA-20 and MA-50 on the H1 chart and trades under the MA-200 on the daily timeframe. The Ichimoku Kijun acts as immediate resistance at ¥211.61. Momentum indicators remain weak: RSI sits in 'Sell' territory at 36.95, while both Stochastic RSI and CCI are oversold. Bull/Bear Power confirms intraday dominance by sellers, and the Awesome Oscillator also indicates persistent downside bias. ADX signals continued selling activity, although MACD lacks clear direction.

Range-bound trading set as odds favor further downside

Looking ahead, GBP/JPY is anticipated to remain within the ¥209.77–¥211.87 range over the next sessions. There is a 74% probability of a further move lower, with a 26% chance of a near-term bounce. The baseline scenario envisions sideways consolidation inside this volatility band, while a push above ¥211.61 would be needed to spark a bullish shift. A decisive break below ¥209.77 could open the door for further downside risk.

Anton Kharitonov, analyst at Traders Union, notes that GBP/JPY remains technically weak with sellers in control and downside signals across key momentum indicators. He sees recent UK macro data and mounting fiscal pressure as adding to the cautious tone, while the Yen holds firm on a stable policy outlook. The analyst believes sideways action is likely unless ¥211.61 is reclaimed by bulls. "Until GBP/JPY recovers above resistance, sellers have the upper hand and downside risk remains my base case."

Earlier, analysts noted that GBP/JPY had shifted into a more range-bound setup with an upside bias supported by positive UK economic data and ongoing Bank of Japan caution. The current technical and macro backdrop now signals increased downside risks, making a sustained break below ¥209.77 a key level to watch for further bearish momentum.
