Exporter conversions and official policy moves stabilize exchange market

Citibank Korea reports that strong demand from local exporters to convert foreign-currency earnings into won is set to offset outflows of up to $12.5 billion in foreign investor dividends. The South Korean government and the Bank of Korea are planning large-scale purchases of long-term U.S. Treasuries to help boost foreign exchange reserves and stabilize the exchange rate. These efforts include exploring ways to raise dollars with minimal effects on the USD/KRW market, signaling active policy management to maintain stability.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, views the USD/KRW rebound as tentative and technically fragile. He notes that staying above the 20- and 50-day averages may give bulls hope, but persistent selling pressure in the MACD and a dominant long-term downtrend limit upside prospects. Kharitonov points to mixed momentum indicators and warns that exporter demand is likely a one-off buffer rather than a trend change, especially with large dividend outflows looming. He remains skeptical about immediate upside, as the pair failed to reclaim key resistance. "Short-lived rebounds above ₩1,348 do not alter the underlying bearish structure — I see little reason for optimism until the 200-day average is challenged convincingly."
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees constructive signals for USD/KRW, with policy support from the Bank of Korea and strong exporter flows providing a foundation for further growth. He emphasizes the proactive measures to boost reserves and manage FX volatility as clear positives, keeping sentiment stable even amid foreign dividend outflows. Karapetjanc believes the bullish short-term structure remains intact above ₩1,348 and expects the market to offer fresh breakout opportunities if resistance at ₩1,363 is cleared. "With institutional support and exporter demand, I expect the pair to revisit higher levels — opportunities remain for nimble traders."
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, is cautious on the current USD/KRW setup. She notes that policy actions, while active, highlight underlying fragilities as authorities scramble to stabilize reserves. For Dele, the risk of a correction is heightened by overbought signals and the market's inability to reclaim its long-term average. "I remain wary of a downside move — government intervention rarely resolves fundamental imbalances quickly."

Short-term upside persists as mixed momentum meets resistance

USD/KRW is trading above both the 20-day and 50-day moving averages at ₩1,334 and ₩1,346, but remains well below the 200-day moving average at ₩1,443. This setup signals a bullish bias over the short and medium term, though the long-term trend remains bearish. Key levels include a near-term support at ₩1,348 and resistance at ₩1,363. Momentum indicators are mixed: the MACD highlights persistent selling pressure, while the ADX and Awesome Oscillator lean bullish. Both the RSI and CCI are neutral, but Stochastic RSI is in the overbought zone, raising the risk of a short-term downside correction. Bull/Bear Power shows buyers still driving intraday moves. Price action sits near session highs with measured volatility.

Earlier, analysts noted that US Dollar vs South Korean Won was stabilizing with modest bullish momentum as policy reassurances and rising reserves reduced intervention risks. The current analysis adds a new dimension with evidence of strong exporter demand counterbalancing foreign dividend outflows, making a decisive break above ₩1,363 a key level to watch for confirmation of further upside.
