But we saved everything 🙂.
Fair Isaac shares jumped more than 15% last week, topping the market’s biggest gainers. Revenue continues to grow rapidly (recent quarter +26%) with high margins despite a 15% workforce reduction due to AI integration. So can FICO defend its long-held dominance in credit scores and overcome competitive and regulatory pressures?
Fair Isaac shares topped gainers across major indexes and showed one of the most unexpected rallies in the S&P 500. The stock closed near $771 after climbing from $668. The result is even more remarkable, considering that the S&P 500 declined 2% over the same period. Data and analytics companies such as Equifax and CoStar demonstrated some progress but were much below Fair Isaac’s dynamics.

The rally followed a September decline that brought the stock down 50% year-to-date and 52% over the prior 12 months. FICO plunged more than 26% after the Federal Housing Finance Agency directed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to adopt a single loan-level pricing adjustment grid. It meant that rival VantageScore 4.0 received the same status as classic FICO scores. By early October, the shares had touched a 52-week low near $586, but then the stock reversed the trend.
Investors responded positively to management’s decisions. On October 6, Fair Isaac presented a plan to eliminate 15% of positions during the process of the company’s restructuring. The executives said it would optimize the organizational structure, simplify operations, and accelerate AI-driven product development. It expects about $27 million in pre-tax charges, mostly severance, in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, with the plan largely complete by the third quarter of fiscal 2027.

In a statement to Reuters, the company noted: “This simplified structure allows us to operate and bring innovations to market faster and create more value for our customers.” The announcement and a favorable situation in the data analytics sphere enabled the strongest single-day gains of the week (11%).
However, the competitive and regulatory situation in the industry has not changed. VantageScore has gained a limited but growing share in government-sponsored enterprise loans. Fair Isaac still provides the majority of credit-scoring solutions used by lenders through its reliance on underwriting systems. Yet the approach of equal pricing weakens the company’s historical advantage.

Fair Asaac’s third-quarter revenue reached $674 million, up about 26% on an annual basis. It was driven by earlier price increases in mortgage scores and sustainable software platform growth. Gross margins remain high as the overall cost of the scoring business remains low. But analysts believe that lower-priced alternatives may create additional pressure in the medium term.
Wall Street has become more conservative even as the shares showed a record rally. In recent days, Mizuho cut its price target to $1,063 from $1,344 while maintaining an Outperform rating. The experts mentioned rising mortgage challenges and regulatory developments. RBC Capital lowered its target to $1,045 from $1,525, also keeping an Outperform view. But its estimates are higher due to the expected interest rates and FHFA-related risks. Other firms, including Raymond James and Needham, also reduced their targets.

The consensus 12-month target now is $1,032, implying a 30% rise from recent levels. Ratings mostly include Buy or Outperform, but the proportion of Hold and Sell tends to slightly increase. Fair Isaac’s software and decision-management platforms are well-diversified, but the mortgage environment remains unstable, thus causing additional concerns.
Overall, the past week's results should be interpreted as a classic relief rally from oversold conditions. An actual resolution of the competitive threat has not occurred yet. Fair Isaac relies on powerful network effects and high margins, but regulatory shifts favor its competitors. The company’s AI investments and cost optimization positively affect it as volume and pricing pressure intensify.
At the same time, the stock trades discounted to its peaks near $2,400, and new regulatory decisions that promote VantageScore adoption may cause another demand shock. Investors will monitor upcoming earnings as reliable evidence of Fair Isaac’s ability to operate efficiently under the new conditions. For now, Fair Isaac has earned the title of share-price leader, thus attracting additional attention from short-term and speculative traders.
