Maine Democrats nominate Graham Platner for Senate race against Susan Collins
Maine Senate race heats up

Maine’s Democratic primary reshapes one of the most competitive U.S. Senate contests of the November midterms, with voters backing political newcomer Graham Platner despite controversy surrounding his candidacy. The result sets up a high-stakes general election against Republican Senator Susan Collins as both parties focus money and attention on control of Congress.

Highlights

  • Graham Platner secures Maine's Democratic Senate nomination with roughly 75% of votes, far ahead of Janet Mills’ under 20%, per the AP.
  • Platner’s campaign faces scrutiny as allegations of explicit messages and volatile relationships emerge, though he denies parts of these reports.
  • A University of Massachusetts poll shows Platner leading incumbent Susan Collins by five points ahead of the high-stakes November Senate contest.

Primary result sets up November contest

As reported by Financial Times, Platner wins Tuesday’s Democratic primary by a wide margin, with The Associated Press calling the race less than two hours after polls close. With 8 per cent of votes counted on Tuesday night, he has support from roughly three-quarters of Democratic primary voters in Maine, while Governor Janet Mills, who suspended her Senate campaign earlier this year but remains on the ballot, places a distant second with just under one-fifth.

The outcome means Platner becomes the Democratic nominee to challenge Collins in November. The Maine race is expected to rank among the most closely watched Senate battles in the country, as Democrats prepare to direct significant resources toward unseating the longtime incumbent.

Platner’s campaign has drawn national attention because party leaders had largely rallied behind Mills before she exited the race. The 41-year-old oyster farmer and political outsider has attracted parts of the Democratic base with a plain-speaking populist message, even as allegations about past conduct and social media activity cloud the campaign.

Controversy and broader electoral stakes

Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, had told campaign officials about sexually explicit text messages her husband exchanged with several women last year. Last week, The New York Times reported that three former partners described volatile and toxic relationships that were, in at least one case, physically threatening; Platner says last week that some allegations are simply not true.

Collins enters the race as one of the few Republican senators who voted to convict Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial in early 2021, but she has also backed the president on several major issues, including Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. First elected in 1996, Collins has previously survived expensive Democratic challenges, including a contest six years ago when Democrats spent more than $50 million trying to defeat her.

With less than five months until the midterms, recent polling in Maine indicates Platner holds a measurable lead over Collins. A University of Massachusetts poll released last week shows the Democratic challenger ahead by five points, while Maine joins North Dakota, Nevada and South Carolina among states holding partisan primaries on Tuesday.

Our earlier article on Senator Bill Cassidy’s healthcare affordability push explained his MVP agenda, which would route more federal health dollars directly to patients through health savings accounts rather than through insurers and other intermediaries. We also outlined how this approach ties to the PBM Reform Act on prescription-price transparency and to the Health Care Freedom for Patients Act, underscoring the broader partisan divide in Washington over how to reduce costs.
