White House stages UFC spectacle as Trump deepens political and business ties
The White House turns its South Lawn into a temporary arena for a UFC event that coincides with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and the administration’s America 250 celebrations. The bout highlights how mixed martial arts now sits at the center of Trump’s political branding, while also drawing attention to financial, media and sponsorship links around the event.
Highlights
- The White House stages a 14-fighter UFC event on the South Lawn as part of the US 250th anniversary, with official backing and a partnership agreement signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
- Trump's business ties deepen as he purchases up to $50,000 in UFC parent stock, Crypto.com sponsors the event after donating $35 million to a Trump vehicle, and fighters receive bonuses in World Liberty Financial cryptocurrency.
- Paramount acquires exclusive broadcast rights for the White House UFC event and, after its government-approved Skydance merger, announces a $7.7 billion UFC broadcast deal effective in 2025.
Event setup and official backing
As reported by Financial Times, Sunday’s event places 14 fighters inside a chain-link cage on the White House South Lawn, beneath a 92ft temporary Colosseum built for what organizers call a celebration of the American fighting spirit. The card includes UFC lightweight Michael Chandler and heavyweight Josh Hokit, and the administration presents the event as part of the 250th anniversary of the U.S.The White House and senior officials openly back the show. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signs a public-private partnership with the UFC to promote sports diplomacy initiatives and educational programming related to mixed martial arts, comparing the fight’s symbolism to the U.S. putting a man on the moon.
Unlike standard UFC cards, the Washington event does not include women fighters. Attempts to stop the bout also fail to gain traction after a federal judge stalls a lawsuit from the non-profit Public Integrity Project, which calls the event a "volcano of corruption."
Political symbolism and commercial links
The spectacle underscores the close alignment between the UFC and Trump’s Maga movement. Dana White, the UFC’s chief executive and a longtime Trump ally, helps connect the president to influential voices during the 2024 campaign, while sociologist Kyle Green says the sport is now among the clearest cultural signals of Maga identity. The event also brings several business relationships into focus. Trump’s recent financial disclosures show he buys up to $50,000 of stock in UFC’s parent company in March, while Crypto.com, a Trump donor, sponsors the White House event after contributing $35 million to a Trump fundraising vehicle over the past 18 months. Fighters are also set to receive bonuses in cryptocurrency issued by World Liberty Financial, the Trump family’s struggling crypto company.
Media arrangements add another commercial layer. Paramount broadcasts the event exclusively after the Trump administration allows its merger with Skydance, and Paramount Skydance later announces a $7.7 billion UFC broadcast deal after the merger closes in 2025.
Criticism from Democrats remains muted, with some party figures avoiding direct attacks on the event or the sport itself. Even so, some former MMA competitors and commentators criticize the White House show, and weather risks, including expected thunderstorms in Washington, still threaten to disrupt the evening.
Our earlier report on the Justice Department’s clearance of Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery explained that regulators concluded the deal was unlikely to harm competition across streaming, linear TV, and theatrical film distribution. We also noted that the decision removed a key antitrust hurdle and supported the view that shifting audience habits and intense platform rivalry are reshaping competitive dynamics in the media sector.
