Commerce meeting follows emergency access restrictions
As reported by Reuters, senior Anthropic technical staff are scheduled to meet government officials at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington on Monday to try to resolve the dispute over the export curbs. An official in the Trump administration says the discussions come after the U.S. government ordered the AI company late last week to suspend access to its top-tier models for foreign nationals. A person close to the company tells Reuters that Anthropic's technical staff have been meeting officials virtually almost every day since the administration contacted the company on Friday.
Security concerns widen pressure on AI model access
The administration ordered Anthropic to block any foreign nationals, whether inside or outside the U.S., from using its latest models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, the company says. In response, Anthropic says it will disable access to the models globally. The government believes there is a way of bypassing, or jailbreaking, a safeguard meant to prevent Fable 5 from being used to identify software vulnerabilities. The episode highlights growing scrutiny of advanced AI systems as U.S. authorities weigh national security risks tied to model access and potential misuse.
Our earlier report on the U.S. export-control order targeting Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 explained how the company was compelled to suspend access for any foreign national and, to ensure compliance, temporarily restricted availability more broadly. We also outlined the government’s national-security rationale tied to a suspected jailbreak risk and noted that Anthropic was seeking talks with officials to restore access.
