UK advances Brakestop missile program for Ukraine without U.S. components
UK missile aid bypasses US

Britain is moving ahead with a new long-range missile effort for Ukraine as Kyiv and its allies seek greater control over weapons deployment in the war against Russia. The three prototypes are designed to avoid U.S. parts, a feature intended to reduce export and operational constraints while supporting lower-cost, higher-volume production.

Highlights

  • UK's Project Brakestop successfully trialed three missile prototypes, with deployment to Kyiv targeted by end-2026 to ensure sovereign UK export control.
  • Brakestop missiles, built entirely without U.S. components, aim for a production rate of 20 per month at £400,000 per unit excluding warhead, featuring 225kg warhead capacity.
  • The program accelerates UK and European defence industry movement toward ITAR-free, modular long-range strike capabilities amid rising focus on non-U.S. supply chains.

Prototype trials and deployment timeline

As first reported by Financial Times, the UK Ministry of Defence says three prototype missiles under Project Brakestop complete successful spring trials after development began in November 2024. The systems are being developed by MBDA UK, MGI Engineering and Rotron Aerospace, and after further tests this year, one or more missiles is expected to reach Kyiv by the end of 2026, according to a government official.

The government says the missiles are being built without any U.S. components, reflecting a requirement to preserve sovereign UK control over transfers to Ukraine. Officials say earlier limits on the use and delivery of long-range weapons, including Storm Shadow and U.S. Atacms, help drive the push for alternatives that do not depend on Washington's approval or U.S.-linked guidance and mapping inputs.

MBDA's prototype, Crossbow, uses an in-house visual navigation system, while MGI uses a similar setup designed by Auterion, which confirms the navigation and underlying data do not originate in the U.S. Rotron is offering a propeller-driven design that trades speed for longer range, while MGI's Tiger Shark applies advanced composite technology adapted from Formula 1 engineering.

Production goals and European defence implications

Beyond reducing political and export risk, Brakestop is intended to be cheaper and faster to manufacture than existing long-range strike weapons. Ministry requirements state the missile should be produced at a rate of 20 a month, at roughly 400,000 pounds per unit without the warhead, and be designed for a 225kg warhead, compared with 450kg for Storm Shadow.

The project also reflects a broader shift in European defence procurement as companies seek systems that are less exposed to U.S. component rules and policy changes. European manufacturers have accelerated work on non-U.S. supply chains in recent months, while Ukrainian companies are also developing ITAR-free long-range drones and cruise missiles such as Firepoint's FP-2 and FP-5.

For the UK defence sector, the programme gives both large and smaller manufacturers a role in a new category of scalable strike weapons. MBDA, owned by BAE Systems, Airbus and Leonardo, says Crossbow is being built with partners across the UK and Europe using a modular design and commercial as well as military off-the-shelf parts to support faster production at scale.

In our earlier report, we covered the Brussels summit dispute sparked by European Council President António Costa’s outreach to Moscow about possible Ukraine peace talks. We noted the backlash from several EU leaders over the lack of consultation and the broader split over who should represent Europe in negotiations, as well as Russia’s hardline rejection of both EU and E3 diplomatic tracks.
