Rolls-Royce backs UltraFan despite technical weakness

Rolls-Royce continues to benefit from strong fundamental tailwinds, although its shares have failed to hold a key technical support level.

The company's biggest recent development is its plan to re-enter the market for single-aisle aircraft engines. The new UltraFan 30 program targets future generations of the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families - the largest segment of the global commercial aviation market, which Rolls-Royce exited more than a decade ago.

UltraFan 30 is expected to deliver approximately 20% lower fuel consumption than current-generation engines, positioning it as a potential competitor to products from GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney. If successfully commercialized, the program could give Rolls-Royce access to the fastest-growing segment of the commercial aircraft engine market and significantly expand its long-term revenue potential.

Rolls-Royce needs to reclaim GBX 1,424

RR shares failed to hold the key GBX 1,424 support level, creating a significant technical obstacle to further upside.

The next major support is located at GBX 1,380. If buyers fail to defend this level, the risk of a decline toward the GBX 1,355 - 1,325 zone will increase substantially.

The RSI (14) remains the primary technical hurdle, as it continues to hover near overbought territory.

If Rolls-Royce manages to reclaim GBX 1,424, the next upside target lies in the GBX 1,600 - 1,650 range.

Rolls-Royce still has strong long-term growth drivers

Despite the recent deterioration in the technical picture, Rolls-Royce's long-term investment case remains compelling. Re-entering the single-aisle aircraft engine market could open the company's largest addressable market in commercial aviation and create a new engine for long-term growth.

However, investors will be looking for tangible progress before fully pricing in that potential. Until then, the stock is likely to remain sensitive to key technical levels and broader market sentiment.
