IRS shifts information return e-filing to IRIS before 2027 season
Information return filers using the IRS FIRE platform face a mandatory move to a new electronic filing system before the 2027 filing season. After the November maintenance window, FIRE no longer accepts submissions, making IRIS the required channel for filing tax year 2026 information returns in 2027.
Highlights
- The IRS will retire the FIRE system, requiring all information return filers to transition to the IRIS platform before the 2027 filing season.
- IRIS offers two channels—a web-based Taxpayer Portal for up to 100 e-filed returns per session and Application to Application integration for higher volumes.
- Filers must complete an IRIS Application for TCC, monitor IRIS QuickAlerts, and register monthly for IRIS Working Group meetings to stay updated on transition requirements.
Transition plan for information return filers
As reported by Internal Revenue Service, filers that currently rely on Filing Information Returns Electronically, or FIRE, need to prepare now for the system's retirement and complete the shift to the Information Returns Intake System, or IRIS.IRIS is a modernized platform that receives information returns through two channels, the IRIS Taxpayer Portal and IRIS Application to Application. The system becomes available in 2023 as part of a phased transition of forms from FIRE, and beginning in 2027 all forms previously supported by FIRE are available through IRIS.
The IRS says filers should complete an IRIS Application for TCC, review guidance on e-filing information returns with IRIS, subscribe to IRIS QuickAlerts and register for IRIS Working Group meetings. Those meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month, and participants must register each month to receive the meeting link.
Operational impact for tax reporting workflows
The change affects both smaller filers and higher-volume users with different submission needs. The free, web-based IRIS Taxpayer Portal allows users to e-file up to 100 returns at a time, enter information manually or upload it through a CSV file, and download payee copies while maintaining records of completed and filed forms.Filers that use third-party software or build their own systems can use IRIS Application to Application for larger volumes of information returns. The IRS says additional updates on system changes, maintenance and meeting materials are provided through IRIS QuickAlerts, IRIS Working Group meetings and IRS.gov.
