Amazon reshuffles Alexa leadership after premium tablet launch
Amazon is reorganizing leadership in its Alexa division as it expands the voice assistant into higher-priced hardware and subscription offerings. The change comes a day after the company unveiled its first tablets featuring Alexa+, a generative AI version of the service tied to Prime membership or sold separately.

- Daniel Rausch, VP of Alexa and Echo, will depart the unit next month, with Aidan Marcuss replacing him after joining in early 2025.
- Alexa+ launches with new premium Alexa Tablets, included in the $139-a-year Prime or sold as a $20/month standalone service.
- Alexa remains a loss-making unit since 2014, intensifying pressure for Amazon to demonstrate a profitable strategy amid leadership changes and product upgrades.
Leadership changes in Alexa unit
As reported by Reuters, Amazon said Daniel Rausch, a 17-year company veteran who has served as vice president of Alexa and Echo for more than three years, is stepping away from the unit next month after helping lead the assistant's public launches and events.Rausch is set to return in another role within Amazon's devices and services division in 2027. Amazon plans to replace him with Aidan Marcuss, currently vice president of Fire TV, advertising and the Amazon appstore, who joined from Microsoft in early 2025.
Kevin Keith, a vice president overseeing product and marketing, will retain that position while also taking on Marcuss' responsibilities for the time being. Amazon declines to provide additional details on the changes.
Alexa strategy and business pressure
Alexa has been a consistent money-loser for Amazon since its release in 2014, adding pressure to show a clearer commercial path as the company refreshes the product with generative AI features.Amazon has spent several years developing the new version of the assistant, branded Alexa+, which can respond to longer prompts. The service is built into the new Alexa Tablets announced on Thursday, a higher-end offering than earlier low-cost Fire tablets.
Alexa+ is included with the $139-a-year Prime membership or available as a standalone service for $20 a month. Marcuss most recently oversaw the launch of a new Fire TV stick last month, a product that has received mixed reviews.
Amazon’s decision to stop using nondisclosure agreements in data center negotiations with local governments highlighted how community resistance and transparency demands are reshaping AI infrastructure buildouts. Our earlier article explained that growing backlash and moratoriums in multiple regions are turning permitting and local relations into real business risks that could slow AI capacity expansion and raise execution and regulatory uncertainty.
