Frontline equipment and force modernisation

As reported by GOV.UK, the refreshed Defence Investment Plan is set to commit more than £500 million to continue the transition of the UK Commando Force into the Future Commando Force, with an emphasis on more immediate operational needs.

The package includes new high-speed Commando Insertion Craft designed for maritime security missions, as well as nearly £100 million for technologies such as uncrewed vessels, next-generation communications, networked targeting and strike drones. The plan also includes investment in larger Amphibious Transport Ships intended to support Commando operations and help create a combined fleet with the Netherlands.

Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis says the changes are intended to put the latest equipment into the hands of frontline personnel more quickly. He says the investment in drones, boats and amphibious transport ships is aimed at helping Commandos stay ahead of adversaries in a more dangerous security environment.

UK industry and NATO implications

The spending shift is also positioned as an industrial policy measure, with the government saying the new technologies present an economic opportunity for UK industry through high-skilled jobs, technology development and export potential.

The Commandos are a rapid-reaction force that can deploy globally at short notice and form part of NATO’s frontline response capability. Under the updated plan, their transformation is focused on the High North, an area the government describes as growing in importance for UK and NATO security.

The programme also deepens defence cooperation with Norway, a key NATO ally in the High North, and builds on the existing Type 26 frigate partnership. The new insertion craft could support maritime security operations, including the seizure of Russian shadow fleet tankers.
