  • The delegation will visit EBRD-backed clients Varus and Makprogres, reviewing operations and touring Makprogres's new wafer production facility to assess industrial expansion.
  • EBRD has invested almost 3.2 billion euros in North Macedonia across 219 projects, currently prioritizing regional integration, green transition, and market competitiveness.

Consultation agenda and official meetings

As reported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the visit forms part of a regular series of consultations that allows shareholder representatives to meet government counterparts, banking and business leaders, international partners and civil-society groups.

The delegation includes directors and alternate directors representing multiple shareholder constituencies, and is accompanied by Divya Chawla Jindal, Principal, Board and Institutional Affairs, Grzegorz Zielinski, EBRD Managing Director for South-Eastern Europe, and Oleg Levitin, Head of Political Affairs.

During the programme, EBRD representatives meet Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski. Additional meetings are planned with ministries responsible for energy, environment, finance and foreign affairs, as well as with the Mayor of Skopje and representatives of the National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia.

The agenda also includes exchanges with civil-society organisations on governance, transparency, competitiveness, European Union accession, the green transition, gender equality and economic inclusion. The board members also hold discussions with local companies, entrepreneurs, commercial banks, diplomatic representatives and international development partners.

Client visits and investment footprint

The delegation visits EBRD-backed clients Varus and Makprogres, where board representatives meet management teams and review the companies' operations, development plans and cooperation with the bank.

At Makprogres, the visit includes a tour of the company's research and development centre and its new wafer production facility, offering directors a closer view of industrial expansion supported by EBRD financing.

The bank has invested almost 3.2 billion euros in North Macedonia through 219 projects to date. Its current priorities in the country are strengthening regional integration and connectivity, accelerating the shift to a green and sustainable economy, and supporting a more competitive, inclusive and well-governed market.

Blended finance in emerging markets was the focus of our earlier report, explaining how public or philanthropic funds can absorb part of the risk to attract more private capital into development projects. We noted that these structures can meaningfully expand lending capacity—often supporting investment volumes around double the public money committed—helping close persistent funding gaps in areas such as energy, infrastructure, and climate resilience.
