Sarajevo adds new trolleybuses

Sarajevo Canton is expanding its zero-emission public transport fleet with 10 new trolleybuses, five of which are already in regular service after training, registration and testing. The delivery is part of a wider urban transport modernisation drive backed by European financing that includes network upgrades, vehicle replacement and new tram infrastructure.

Highlights

  • Sarajevo Canton added 10 new Solaris Trollino 18 trolleybuses, financed by an 8 million euro EIB loan, to upgrade public transport reliability.
  • The trolleybuses, each with capacity for 120 passengers and off-wire capability, aim to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and environmental sustainability in Sarajevo.
  • The broader modernisation programme, backed by a 75 million euro EIB loan, includes tram network upgrades, new vehicles, and covers all public transport modes across Sarajevo Canton.

EIB-backed procurement expands Sarajevo fleet

As reported by the European Investment Bank, the 10 new vehicles delivered to Sarajevo Canton are Solaris Trollino 18 trolleybuses procured through an international tender financed by an 8 million euro EIB loan. The 18-metre vehicles are built by Polish manufacturer Solaris and are designed to strengthen the reliability and quality of local public transport services.

The trolleybuses combine full accessibility, climate-controlled interiors, real-time passenger information, GPS vehicle tracking, USB charging and video surveillance. They can also operate off-wire using onboard batteries, and each vehicle can carry 120 passengers, including 36 seated passengers.

Miha Švent, EIB representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina, said the project is intended to make Sarajevo's transport system greener, more efficient and more comfortable after decades of underinvestment. He added that the broader goal is to improve road safety, support higher public transport use and contribute to cleaner urban living conditions.

Broader transport modernisation across Sarajevo Canton

The new trolleybuses form part of a wider Sarajevo Canton urban transport modernisation programme supported by a 75 million euro EIB loan. The programme also covers upgrades and extensions to tram and trolleybus networks, replacement of ageing vehicles and construction of new tram lines and tracks.

Under the same programme, jointly supported by the EIB and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Sarajevo received new trams in 2024, the first tram fleet renewal in four decades. Sarajevo Canton Transport Minister Adnan Šteta said the authorities have procured more than 100 new public transport vehicles over the past five years and renewed all modes of public transport, with the Solaris trolleybuses marking another step toward safer and more reliable service.

Our earlier article on United Nigeria Airlines’ commercial paper issuance covered the carrier’s plan to raise up to N20 billion to finance fleet expansion and increase operational capacity. We noted that the fundraising was aimed at supporting route growth, strengthening the airline’s domestic market presence, and potentially intensifying competition in Nigeria’s local air travel sector.
