Ranking criteria and latest recognition

According to BusinessWorld, The Asian Banker names Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. the Philippines' strongest bank for the sixth consecutive year in its annual ranking of the world's 1,000 largest and strongest banks.

The ranking assesses institutions based on financial performance, balance sheet strength, asset quality, liquidity and risk management, using an independent panel of central bankers, global financial experts and research professionals.

Metrobank President Fabian S. Dee says the bank's strength comes from customer trust and the commitment of its employees to deliver financial solutions across different market conditions. He says the lender plans to continue strengthening its capabilities, managing risks prudently and creating long-term value for stakeholders.

Financial performance and broader industry standing

Metrobank says the latest distinction adds to several industry honors it receives this year, including the Cesar E.A. Virata Award at the 2026 PDS Annual Awards of the Philippine Dealing System. The bank also posts top rankings in the Local Currency Bonds and G3 Bonds categories at The Asset Benchmark Research Awards 2026, and is named Best Asset Manager and Best Client Services in the Philippines at the Citywire ASEAN Awards 2025/26.

In the first half of 2026, Metrobank books net income of P24.9 billion. Its assets rise 12.7% to P3.9 trillion as of end-June, placing it third in the industry, while total equity stands at P409.7 billion.

The bank's asset quality and balance sheet remain strong. Its nonperforming loan ratio stands at 1.8%, below the industry average of 3.4%, while NPL cover reaches 133.3%; its capital adequacy ratio is 14.9% and common equity Tier 1 ratio is 14.2%, both above regulatory requirements.

In our earlier article on the Philippines’ planned sovereign bond reforms and capital-market constraints, we examined how the shift to a new pricing convention for peso government bonds and targeted index inclusion could widen the investor base and support liquidity. We also noted that the broader payoff for the economy hinges on factors such as global rates, fiscal credibility, and deeper structural reforms—especially building more effective corporate bond and equity markets so businesses can access long-term funding beyond bank loans.
