Michael Kao: Pre-IPO hot potato trend fueling speculation and risk — Pre-IPO speculation raises investor risk

Michael Kao, CIO at Akadia Capital, cautions that rampant speculation is emerging in the market for secondary pre-IPO shares, especially through special purpose vehicles (SPVs) managed by third parties.

Kao observes that the fear of missing out on mega-cap pre-IPO valuations has sparked a 'hot potato' environment, which he believes could result in significant financial harm to some investors.
