Power companies see rising electricity prices

Courtney Theriault highlights that Capital Power CEO Avik Dey, during the company’s latest earnings call, predicted a return to higher pricing for electricity. Dey told analysts that prices could reach $80 or $90 per megawatt hour by early 2028.

By 2029, TransAlta, a major rival, is projecting average prices of $100 per megawatt hour.

Canada’s inflation rate recently jumped 3.2 percent last month, the largest increase since 2023, with Alberta reaching 3.7 percent, according to Courtney Theriault. Economists attributed the rise to higher oil costs. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said a B.C. deal will generate new financial resources to help improve social services.
