NYSE margin debt surges near historic record

Lisa Abramowicz, journalist and co-host on Bloomberg TV/Radio, reports that NYSE margin debt is reaching historic levels according to Deutsche Bank analysts.

Driven in part by a "surprise dovish Fed pivot" in December 2023, the margin debt on the NYSE has jumped 136% since October 2023—an expansion rate only surpassed by February and March 2000.

Abramowicz has closely tracked recent turbulence in major stocks. In June, she reported that Microsoft shares posted their steepest monthly drop since 2008, losing nearly 19%. She has also noted that investors are concerned about tech firms hitting the limit on pricing for advanced language models.
