Edward Dowd, founding partner at OceanSquare Asset Mgmt and ex-BlackRock executive, shares a historical perspective on the telecom equipment and dotcom era. He observes that companies such as Lucent, Nortel, and Cisco ramped up their vendor financing programs starting in 1999, reaching a peak in the fall of 2000.
According to Dowd, this final push in 2000 reflected worsening conditions for new speculative telecom firms with negative cash flow, as obtaining traditional financing became increasingly difficult.
Earlier this year, Dowd highlighted key leadership exits at BlackRock and BlackStone private credit funds, calling attention to investor concerns in that sector. He has also commented on foreign exchange moves, most recently pointing out that the Japanese yen fell to its lowest level since 1986. These observations reflect Dowd’s ongoing monitoring of structural shifts across asset classes.
