U.S. interest expense could rise a further $180 billion in FY2027, Lisa Abramowicz notes
U.S. interest expense may hit $1.1 trillion

Lisa Abramowicz, journalist and co-host on Bloomberg TV/Radio, reports that the annual U.S. interest expense has surpassed $1 trillion for the first time on record over the past year and is projected to finish FY2026 at $1.1 trillion.

According to TD’s Gennadiy Goldberg, the expense could climb by an additional $180 billion in FY2027 if current interest rates remain elevated.

Lisa Abramowicz has previously reported that U.S. workforce participation has fallen to a five-year low, raising questions about labor market strength. Earlier this year, she noted that high-yield bond spreads widened by 28 basis points in three days, the largest such move since October 2025. These developments reflect ongoing attention on U.S. fiscal and credit conditions.
