Hedge funds de-gross UST positions during high equity volatility, Luke Gromen notes
Hedge funds hold 8.5 percent UST market

Hedge funds owned approximately 8.5 percent of the U.S. Treasury market as of late last year.

Luke Gromen, founder and president at FFTT, LLC (Forest for the Trees), added that many hedge funds operate under monthly mandates that cap allowable monthly drawdowns. According to Gromen, when equity volatility rises to a certain point, hedge funds tend to reduce their gross positions, including those in U.S. Treasuries. He said this activity partly explains why U.S. Treasuries have traded more like risk-on assets in recent years.

Gromen has previously cautioned that sharply higher U.S. real rates could trigger a chaotic unwind in international investment flows, as detailed in an earlier analysis. He has also highlighted reports of U.S. President Donald Trump purchasing Russian diesel and noted increased Russian gold and currency buying in a separate report. These observations reflect his focus on macroeconomic factors affecting global markets.
